INTRODUCING: JERMEY MYERS

AUTHOR OF: PANHANDLE BEER FORUM

Beer Blogger Interview

Full name: Jeremy Myers
Name of blog: Panhandle Beer Forum
Current location: Panama City Beach, FL

Background “Snapshot”

1. Where did you grow up?

Dothan, AL

2. What sports if any did you play growing up, through college and beyond?

Mainly golf

3. How old were you when you had your first beer?

I think about 15

4. If you can recall, what is the story of your first beer? Where did you have it? What style and brand was it?

One New Year’s Eve, me and a few friends had this great idea that we were going to camp out in a nearby field and get my older brother to buy us some beer. We gave a bunch of money (maybe 30 bucks, a lot for 15) and he showed up with some Busch Light. He totally ripped us off! I drank about four beers that night. I couldn’t stomach anymore.

5. Where, if applicable, did you go to college? What did you study? What additional activities, organizations, sports did you partake in during college?

Faulkner State C.C., Golf Course Management, played golf (not for school) and I did a lot of surf fishing.

Craft Beer Epiphany

Every craft beer enthusiast has at least one pinnacle craft beer experience that completely changes ones perspective on beer. I refer to this mind-blowing moment as a “craft beer epiphany.”

1. What was your first craft beer epiphany? Recall as many details about it as you can:

St. Bernardus ABT 12. A couple of years ago, my girlfriend and I went to a big beer tasting with a couple of friends. They had several different distributors there, but when I tasted St. Bernardus 12 and was hooked.

2. Have you have additional craft beer epiphanies since the first? Detail as many of them as you wish:

I have had several American Craft epiphanies, but I recently tasted a New Belgium La Folie that I thought was great. In my area, we do not get a lot of sours and I have never been a big sour fan, but this one was really good.

Beer Blog Background

1. How long have you been writing your beer blog?

October, 2009, not long!

2. What inspired you to start writing your blog?

In the panhandle, we are in a beer desert. I started to write articles for the local news and got a couple published and started the blog to help people in the area to learn more about beer, the history and the culture that surrounds it. There is a small community here, but not big.

3. Why did you chose the name of your blog?

I chose Panhandle Beer Forum because I wanted it to be a blog for others to comment and discuss with others, not just me all the time.

4. What are you personal goals for your blog? What do you hope to achieve with it?

Find more beer drinkers.

5. What is one of the coolest things that happened to you as a result of being a beer blogger?

Met a lot of fun people.

6. What are you top 3 favorite beer blogs/beer websites?

  • Ratebeer
  • Beeradvocate
  • The Wench (of course)

Green Man

Beer Talk

1. What are your top 3 favorite beer styles?

I hate this question, I like all beers, but if I have to choose. Right now I drink a lot of IPAs (usually American), Belgian Pale and anything Barreled

2. What are your top 3 favorite breweries?

I also hate this one. Where do I start? Sweetwater, Sierra Nevada and St. Somewhere (in Tarpon Springs, FL)

3. If you could work with or for any one brewery, which one would it be and why?

That’s a tough one! I would say any small brewery in the south. I love craft beer and I love the south.

4. Are you a homebrewer? If yes, what is the most unique and interesting beer recipes you’ve brewed as a homebrewer?

Yes I am. I got an American Oak Barrel for Christmas, so I have only done one batch with it. But, my most interesting recipe would probably be an IPA recipe I have with some rosemary added aged on American oak chips and lavender. People like it.

5. Do you have any beer certifications (BJCP, Cicerone, Siebel, American Brewers Guild)?? If so, what are they?

None.

6. What is your favorite beer and food pairing?

Joey’s Pizza and Sweetwater IPA

The Personal Side

1. What is your current day job?

2. If you could change your career at this very moment, without any restrictions on what you could do, what would you want to do and why?

Own and operate a brewery. As I mentioned before, there are no breweries in the area.

3. Are you married? Children?

No wives or children. I do have a wonderful girlfriend I do intend to marry.

4. Outside of beer and writing, what are some of your other hobbies?

Golf, saltwater fishing, singing ZZ Top Karaoke at my friend Blair’s house.

Off The Beaten Path

1. If you were a style of beer, what style would you be and why?

Maybe a regular ole beer that is true to its roots.

2. You were caught smuggling beer illegally, which has now been made punishable by death. Right before you are sent to the executioner, you are offered one last beer. What beer would you chose and why?

Busch Light, It was my first.

3. If I contracted you to brew a beer (or design a beer recipe) called “The Beer Wench” — what style would you chose and what, if any, extra ingredients would you add?

You seem sweet, so let’s go with a sweet stout.

4. If you could be a superhero, what would you want your superpowers to be?

Doesn’t matter, just as long as I have a cape and I am able to take Chuck Norris down!

5. What is one of the craziest things you have ever done and lived to tell the story?

Hum? I don’t know? Got lost in Cincinnati once.

6. What are your thoughts on bacon?

Let’s just say I love it candied, sprinkled over sweet potato Crème Brulee.
